Prior to the transfer of a title from one owner to another, an inspection must first be performed to ensure any car is in working order and meets safety/operational requirements. As an authorized inspection station in Frederick, MD, we perform Maryland State safety inspections all the time! If you are planning to have your car inspected, here is an outline of the parts and functions you can expect to be checked. For further information, here is a

There are a few complimentary checks we like to take care of for our customers for choosing us for their Maryland Inspection. Tires and brakes are passable at 2/32 of an inch, which is when they should actually be replaced. We’ll be sure to let you know if you should consider a replacement. In addition, fluid checks are not listed as a required check during the inspection, but we’ll be sure to have a look and let you know if the vehicle could benefit from any replacements.

So, What if My Vehicle Doesn’t Pass its Inspection?

If you don’t receive your Certificate of Inspection, the bonus of having your car inspected with a trusted mechanic is that we can usually deliver an inhouse solution that addresses the reason for failure. When a vehicle fails inspection, you have 30 days OR 1,000 miles to get the work completed to avoid having another inspection done. Naturally, we’re happy to make time to service your vehicle to avoid reinspection costs. However, you can have it serviced wherever you want! While we don’t have to do the work, we do legally have to be the shop who reinspects the vehicle if we conducted the initial inspection. Once the inspection is completed and passed, you have 90 days OR 1000 miles to get the paperwork done. If you exceed those parameters, the inspection needs to be done again.

One final thing to keep in mind is that it is very rare for Maryland to allow an extension for cars with 30-day tags. As such, don’t wait until the last minute for your inspection!

Are Emissions Tested During a Maryland State Inspection?

Nope! Emissions are checked every two years, and the MVA will send you a notification when it’s time for testing. For Maryland State Inspections, the vehicle must have all of the manufacturer installed emissions related components present and properly functioning to pass, but testing is not done at this time. If your car does fail its emission test, however, we are authorized to repair it!

Is Your Car Leaking Oil? Don’t Ignore it!

Noticing a few drops of oil on the pavement after you move out of the driveway? This issue may be easy to ignore at first, but it can easily grow into a more serious problem without a prompt repair. After all, high-quality, clean oil is one of the most important factors to ensuring your car stays reliable in the short-term and keeps racking up thousands of miles in the long-term. Moreover, no one likes the sight of a driveway covered in oil drops!

Why is My Car Leaking Oil?

            Oil Filter Related Issues.

Over time, oil filters wear out which makes them unable to continue trapping engine contaminants. Those contaminants still have to go somewhere, which means they’ll likely begin entering seals and potentially cause oil leaks.

            Damaged Gaskets or Pans.

Your car’s oil pans and gaskets are located at the base of the engine, meaning repeated agitation from daily driving can begin to damage them and cause a leak.

            Improper Installations.

Damage over time isn’t the only thing that causes leaks. Sometimes, an incorrect installation can do the trick as well. This commonly occurs if gaskets are overtightened, or the tightness is not evenly distributed.

           Fixing Your Oil Leak

If you notice your car is leaking oil, it’s always best to bring it in for service sooner rather than later. Those pesky oil stains in your driveway will only worsen over time, and even that is only a slight inconvenience compared to the risk of reaching critically low levels of oil and seriously damaging your engine.

Naturally, a simple oil change won’t do the trick and prevent further leaking for this issue. Instead, our team will troubleshoot and identify the source of the leak and then deliver the fix. The cost for this service typically depends on the severity of the leak, further highlighting the importance of early detection and remediation. Naturally, our mechanics always provide an upfront estimate to give you peace of mind that we’ve pinpointed the exact issue causing the leak, and that we’re taking the appropriate steps to ensure your engine never reaches dangerously low levels of oil due to a leak.

Why Might Your Brake Pads Wear Prematurely?

The brake pads in your vehicle are a key part of the safety systems that are present to help you stop quickly and prevent accidents. While you will eventually need to replace your brake pads as part of normal maintenance, if your brake pads wear prematurely it might be a cause for concern. Here are some of the common reasons why your brake pads are not lasting as long as they should.

           Your Driving Patterns

If your brake pads wear prematurely, the way that you drive may be part of the problem. The bad habits that you’ve picked up and the conditions that you drive under make a big difference in how your brake system looks. How much time do you spend sitting in stop-and-go traffic? Do you often drive downhill for long periods? When you find yourself braking, are you often slamming on them instead of slowly compressing the pedal? All of these things can cause rapid wear. When possible, adjust your driving habits.

           Skipping Brake Maintenance

Maintenance is critical to protecting all parts of your vehicle, and the brake system is no different. If your brake pads wear prematurely, you might not be bringing your car in for maintenance frequently enough. Brake pads that are low-quality can also lead to rapid wear. When you visit Churchill Auto Care, we will take care of aligning your tires and performing all types of maintenance that ensure your brake pads last as long as possible before they require repair.

           The Quirks of Your Car

Unfortunately, sometimes cars have quirks that are not discovered until the model has been out for a while. For example, some VW models are known to need brake replacement almost 10,000 miles sooner than similar vehicles. If you find that your brake pads wear prematurely, talk to your mechanic and do your own research online to see if car owners of the same vehicle have the same problem. You might be surprised to find that you aren’t alone. In some cases, this issue may be covered under warranty, which may offset your out-of-pocket costs.

3 Tips to Avoid Early Tire Repairs

With winter only a few short months away, it makes sense for car owners to focus on making sure their car is ready to take on cold temperatures and inclement weather. Most importantly, be sure you’re confident in the rubber beneath you this winter! Our tires are the only part of the vehicle that actually touches the icy roads, so now is the time to set yourself up for peace of mind all fall and winter long. Once your car is outfitted with a fresh set of tires, what can you do to maximize their lifespan?

           Tire Alignments

After investing in a quality set of tires, an alignment can set you on a great trajectory by ensuring the tires are prepared to wear at an even, predictable rate. This service isn’t required, but it’s guaranteed to help your vehicle’s handling and extend the life of your tires as you begin to rack more miles up on them.

Drive With Bumps and Potholes in Mind

Here in the Frederick, MD area, we occasionally come across some bumpier paved roads and even some small gravel sections. Bumps can be unavoidable, but we can still maximize the life of our tires by steering clear of the potholes we’ve come to expect on our daily commutes. Over time, each harsh contact with a bump or pothole will slowly begin to knock our tires back out of alignment. If you can reasonably avoid this, be sure to do so to extend the amount of time needed between each tire service!

Keep an Eye on Your Air Pressure

Driving with your tires inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI is essential for tire safety and reliability, but it can also extend their lifespan. If your car is newer, you’ll likely receive alerts when it’s time to head to the garage and grab your air compressor or head to the gas station to top your tires off with an air refill. As you refill your tires, you can take the time to check your valve stems for any slow leaks, as even a small particle of dirt has the potential to cause a tire to leak faster. Also, be sure to resecure your valve caps after refilling to preserve their condition!

Fall is only a few days away! Routine car maintenance is important year-round, but it’s especially important to keep in mind as the temperature begins to cool down and we enter the home stretch toward winter. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look at the most important maintenance tasks you should have on your radar as we change seasons.

These Maintenance Tasks Will Make Your Car Feel New Again

Is your car starting to feel tired and worn out? It may be tempting to spring for a new car altogether to get a fresh start and enjoy the feeling of a brand new, perfectly functioning vehicle again. In our experience, however, there are several upgrades you can make to keep your vehicle on the road and drastically improve its look and feel. To save you money and extend the life of your vehicle, here are a few maintenance tasks that are sure to make your car feel new again.

While our cars are large machines, the only parts of them that actually contact the ground are four small strips of rubber: our tires. If anything is off in this department, it can easily make your daily driving a miserable experience. A brand-new set of tires along with an alignment will set you up for miles of comfortable driving. If your tires still have plenty of tread left yet your car veers from side to side or handles poorly over potholes, you can skip the new tires at your next visit to the mechanic and enjoy noticeable improvements from an alignment alone.

           Maintaining the Basics

Beyond your tires, there are a handful of simple maintenance tasks you can perform to ensure your car is prepared to offer you nothing other than comfort and reliability for years to come:

            Wiper blade replacements.

Replace your wiper blades roughly once a year to avoid getting stuck in inclement weather with limited visibility.

            Air filter replacements.

Air filters are another easy replacement that can maximize the life of your vehicle. Protect your engine by inspecting your air filters once every year.

            Oil change.

If you are due for an oil change, you may notice a handful of improvements after the service is completed. Specifically, you’ll likely enjoy better gas mileage, more responsive acceleration, and the risk of untimely breakdowns will be largely reduced.

4 Warning Signs for Your Car’s AC System

Is your car’s A/C blowing warm air or making noise? Churchill Auto Care in Frederick, MD shares 4 key warning signs your A/C system needs service. Stay cool—schedule your appointment today!

When it comes to unpleasant surprises, we would like to offer our submission for the most unpleasant of them all: starting your car on a hot summer day only to discover that your AC is no longer functioning. That is a burden we wouldn’t wish on our worst enemy, and it’s a burden we certainly want our customers to avoid as well! Luckily, it’s unlikely that your AC will suddenly stop working overnight. If you keep a lookout for the following symptoms and address them right away, you should be able to steer clear of any untimely AC failures down the road!

No Air or Warm Air (Surprise!)

Okay, let’s get the obvious one out of the way first. If you turn up your AC only to receive a whole lot of nothing or a blast of warm air, there are a host of issues that could be affecting your AC system. If this is the case, don’t panic! Many of the possible issues have simple fixes that your mechanic can complete in one simple visit, whether it’s a refrigerant refill, cooling fan repair, or even debris removal from your AC unit.

           Strange Noises

If your AC is making strange noises despite remaining functional, be sure to avoid ignoring this warning sign. Some drivers simply turn their favorite playlist up a little louder than usual to cover it up, but that “fix” won’t come in handy in the event of a total AC failure. Instead, head over to your trusted mechanic. Whether debris is causing the noise, or a part is reaching its breaking point, it’s best to address these issues as they arise.

           Unpleasant Smells

Turning on your AC should be a refreshing experience. If your AC is bringing a foul odor into your vehicle, it’s probably not a coincidence. This could be occurring due to the presence of mold on the unit or a dirty cabin filter in need of replacement.

           Leaking

Leaking is the final warning sign that it’s time to have your vehicle inspected by a professional. This leaking could be coolant escaping onto the road below, or it could even leak water inside the vehicle itself. In any case, AC leaks will only worsen over time and lead to a larger repair bill as the situation deteriorates.

Earlier this year, we published a blog post about features most of our cars have that initially originated in an effort to push the limits and find any way possible to gain a competitive advantage in motorsport. It’s worth noting that not all motorsport experimentations make it to the mainstream, however. Here are a few of the craziest ideas we’ve ever seen in motorsport!

The Strangest Ideas We’ve Seen in Motorsport

           Six Wheeled Formula 1 Car

More wheels equal more speed, right? That’s what Tyrell had in mind when they entered their six-wheeled P34 in the 1976 and 1977 Formula 1 seasons. The logic here was simple: two smaller front wheels could easily be concealed behind the mandated 1.5m front wing and create better aerodynamic flow. The car managed to reach the top step of the podium one time and has since become an unmistakable classic.

           Magnesium Chassis

These days, motorsport regulations have struck a reasonable balance between weight, high performance, and safety. In the 1970’s that was far from being the case. In 1971, Porsche revealed their challenger for the upcoming 24 hours of Le Mans: the 917. In order to keep the car at minimal weight, the chassis was constructed with magnesium rather than the conventional choice of aluminum. While the car was extremely light, it came at a cost of being extremely flammable. Even still, the Porsche 917 managed to barrel down the straights of Le Mans at nearly 250mph and claimed victory at the 1971 edition of the race.

           Diesel Indy 500 Entry

During the early 1930’s, the organizers of the Indy 500 were facing the struggles of the Great Depression leading up to the 1931 edition of the race. In order to populate the dwindling starting grid, the organizers allowed the Cummins Engine Company car to participate despite exceeding the maximum mandated weight. Luckily, the diesel-powered engine performed exceptionally well due to its unprecedented fuel efficiency. In fact, the 13th place finish marked the first time a car ever completed the race without stopping to refuel. In total, the car used $1.40 in diesel fuel to complete the race. These days, that amount would get you almost a half-gallon of fuel at the pump.

The Most Common Electrical Issues for Cars

Experiencing flickering lights or battery problems? Churchill Auto Care in Frederick, MD breaks down the most common car electrical issues and how our ASE-certified team can help. Schedule today!

Even if you haven’t made the switch to a fully electric car, there’s no question that your car’s electrical system plays a vital role in safely and reliably getting you from point A to point B. Whether it’s starting your engine, adjusting your mirrors, or even charging your phone, our vehicles simply wouldn’t be the same without a well-functioning electrical system. So, let’s look at a few common occurrences that signify something is probably awry with your car’s electronics.

           Dead Battery

No surprises here! A dead battery is the most common and easily detected electrical-related issue. You shouldn’t automatically swap out a dead battery without making some other checks throughout the vehicle, however. It’s entirely possible that your battery is still in good condition and that your electrical issues lie elsewhere. Schedule a diagnostic with a trusted mechanic before making the switch!

           Bad Alternator

The primary purpose of your car’s alternator is to ensure the battery fully recharges and provides electrical power while your engine is running. A bad alternator will lead to a variety of difficulties, potentially including dimmed headlights, trouble starting your car, loss of power steering, and loss of air conditioning. Depending on the car, a faulty alternator could even cause the vehicle to shut down while driving. Don’t ignore this potentially dangerous issue!

           Fatigued Starter

If your engine won’t start, a faulty battery is usually the prime suspect. However, a faulty starter could also be the culprit. If you hear a series of grinding or clicking sounds as you attempt to start your engine, this is likely the issue.

           Blown Fuses

If you’ve owned your car for long enough, you’re sure to blow a fuse eventually. Usually, this leads to minor electrical issues, including loss of interior lighting, radio, or turn signals. Luckily, this is an easy and inexpensive fix. Even still, multiple blown fuses in a short period of time could be a symptom of something more serious occurring in your electrical, system. Be sure to take your car in for an examination and repair to prevent any further damage!
